Biggest yard sale of the year this Saturday

This Saturday, June 1, is Killarney’s annual Town Wide Garage Sales day, and it’s going to be lively out on the streets.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. around 30 families, groups, and individuals will be lining up their gathered goods outside for a day of busy roadside commerce.

New this year to the bartering front-yard fray is the Lakeview Community Church, and member Rose Heide says they are adding their name to the list of vendors for a special reason.

“A couple of months ago we were asked by the church council to do a kind of church clean-up,” said Heide. “We got busy, and it took some time, and we discovered that we had a lot of beautiful things. We had an over-abundance of items bought over the years, which includes fabulous decorations such as silk flowers, centrepieces, candles, decorating equipment, and much more.”

The group then decided to offer up the mountains of lovely items in the town-wide sale. And the monies collected from the sales will help the church purchase much-needed sewing materials for the gorgeous quilt blankets that they hand-make each year for families and countries in need.

“It’s two-fold,” said Heide. “The church needed to clean up, and we needed more quilt supplies. We won’t have prices on the items, we will just be asking for donations for the sales. We are raising funds to purchase more blanket supplies, so that we can continue to meet a worldwide need of warm blankets to those who need it most. We are hoping that people will grab hold of our vision.”

Last year the church volunteers created over a hundred of the colourful and warm quilted blankets, which were later distributed through the Mennonite Central Committee to countries and places in need of warmth.

Their garage sale will take place in the basement of the church, at 616 Lakeview Avenue, and they will also be setting up a couple of boulevard signs to guide shoppers inside, and down into the church’s basement gymnasium, said Heide.

The Lakeview Community Church sale will also run today (Friday, May 31) from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., as well as during the regular Town Wide Garage Sales day hours of Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ALL HANDS ON DECK – Knotters of all ages helped tie together over 100 quilts back on January 31, at Lakeview Community Church, during the MCC’s Great Winter Warm-Up. This weekend’s garage sale donations at the church will help them purchase materials for their next round of quilt-making.
