A heck of a hundred year party!
Fun and laughter as Killarney Lakeside Golf Club celebrates 100 years
by Trish Bedford and Laurie Campbell
Killarney Lakeside Golf Club’s (KLGC) 100th celebration started July 1 with window paintings, table centrepieces, history displays, guessing games, and birthday cake, of course.
Sunday, September 5 was a fun family day, with a golf cart parade, kids’ carnival, BBQ, and then the nine-hole scramble. Members, families, and community joined forces as organizers, volunteers, and spectators to participate in the events.
The parade was led by the local RCMP, along with parade marshals Roy Pugh and Mary Bedford, who are both long-standing shareholders and members. Decorated carts rolled their way through Oak Point, Kerry Park Campground, and back to the golf course.
Cart decoration winners were pirates Mike, Cara, Lennox, and Weston Harms for Family Spirit. Best Theme winners were Pin Hunters Jim and Connie Krowchuk. Overall winners were Gwen and Derek Tripp with their plumbing essentials vehicle.
The kids’ carnival team of organizers came up with many fun-filled activities and prizes. Sponsors for the event were Boundary Co-op, HyLife, and Pratts. Our very own Cala Korman, 16, demonstrated her driving skills. We are all proud of Cala’s accomplishments in many provincial and Canadian tournaments.
The nine-hole scramble at the end of the day was full, and fun was had by all. The laughter was heard all across the golf course.
Some of the challenges included teeing off with retro clubs, teeing off while sitting on a chair, picking one club to use for the entire hole, using pool noodles as tees, and putting with mini-hockey sticks.
A huge thank you from KLGC and the community to those who organized, volunteered, and participated to help make this day a successful fun-filled event.

A long line of golf carts – Candy was tossed to the spectators at Kerry Park as 24 wonderfully decorated carts turned to make their way back to the golf club Sunday afternoon to continue the party. The golf cart parade, which wound its way through Oak Point and Kerry Park Campground, kicked off the festivities as the Killarney Lakeside Golf Club celebrated its 100th anniversary.
PARADE MARSHALS – An RCMP cruiser was in the lead on Sunday afternoon, followed by golf cart parade marshals Mary Bedford and Roy Pugh, who led the other 22 decorated carts along the route. There’s Mary and her great granddaughter, Taylor Dyck, in their cart (below) during the parade through Kerry Park, followed by several more decked-out entries in the golf course parking lot.
BEST THEME – Pin Hunters Jim and Connie Krowchuk took home the Best Theme award for their hunting-inspired golf cart.
golf cart parade overall winners – Overall winners for cart decorations were Gwen and Derek Tripp (above) with their plumbing essentials vehicle, while the Family Spirit award went to pirates Mike, Cara, Lennox, and Weston Harms (below).
CROQUET, EH – Kids croquet and many other golf inspired carnival games kept the children busy throughout the afternoon.
CALA KORMAN TRIBUTE – Connie Krowchuk (left) mentioned the many accomplishments of talented local golfer Cala Korman (right) in a speech, just prior to a demonstration by the 16-year-old. Korman, who started casually playing at the golf club by the age of five, demonstrated her driving skills for the crowd (below).
ALL SCRAMBLED – Hockey sticks, chairs, vintage clubs and other fun features were part of the nine-hole golf scramble that wrapped up the day.
