Ninette fishing derby attracts sweaty star and biggest crowd yet

Killarney’s derby this Sunday, and kids fish for free

Organizers of the fifth annual fishing derby were overwhelmed with the success of the growing event, which attracted a record 869 competitors.

KILLARNEY’S FISH DERBY THIS SUNDAY – The Shamrock Family Fishing Derby goes this Sunday, March 11 on Killarney Lake from noon to 5 p.m. Registration is 10 a.m. at Kerry Park, and kids 15 and under fish for free. Healthy Lake Ice Fishing Derby results

The fifth annual Healthy Lake Ice Fishing Derby was held on Saturday, March 3 at the northern basin of Pelican Lake in Ninette, MB.

The derby was a great success, with 724 adult anglers and 145 junior anglers who all came out to fish, for a record high participant number of 869.

During the four hours of derby fishing, a total of 79 fish were measured: 73 Northern Pike, three Perch, and three Walleye.

Congratulations to Isaac Friesen of Killarney, MB, who caught the longest fish overall in the derby, a Northern Pike measuring 93 cm. As the winner of the derby, Isaac won a Can Am Outlander 450 Quad valued at $8,000, sponsored by Enns Brothers.

Also, congratulations to Soleil Gaudreault of Brandon, MB, who caught the longest fish in the junior category, a Northern Pike at 74 cm. Soleil won a Pelican Argo kayak, sponsored by Jo-Brook Outdoors.

All proceeds will go towards our continued aeration efforts in Pelican Lake.

At our derby we award 1st to 7th place in each fish species.

This year, we awarded the top seven fish caught in the Northern Pike category, the three fish caught in the Perch category, and the three fish caught in the Walleye category.

Then the remainder of prizes were given away in a random draw of all derby participants.

Adult Perch winners: 1) Jaryn Orr, 28.5 cm; 2) Shaun Hammond, 24 cm and 3) Alan Rolfe, 22 cm.

Adult Walleye winners: 1) Brett Pierce 38 cm; 2) Kevin Gudz 38 cm.

We awarded the top 7 Northern Pike caught in the Junior category. There were no Walleye or Perch caught in the Junior category. The remaining Junior prizes were given away in a random draw.

Here are the junior category winners: Northern Pike – 1) Soleil Gaudreault, 74 cm; 2) Curtis Boulet 72.5 cm; 3) Brydon Cornock 66.5 cm; 4) Aiden McGorman, 66 cm; 5) Kyle Beatty 60.5 cm; 6) Keeyan Sisson 59.5 cm and 7) Kylie Wardle 58 cm.
