Killarney’s first professional female hockey player honoured

BY JAY STRUTH

Surrounded by fans on Friday night of the Killarney Fair, during the chariot racing intermission, Killarney’s Jaycee Magwood was given a special honour.

“We have a world class athlete right in our community, playing professional hockey in Sweden, and we felt that it was appropriate, as council, that we honour her with her jersey being hung up in our arena (in the viewing area),” said Mayor Merv Tweed (right), who was joined by councillors Greg Ericson (left) and Gary King as they honoured Magwood. “And the idea is that young kids, particularly young women, will see her as an example of what can be accomplished if they put their mind to it.”

After playing Killarney Minor Hockey, Magwood moved on to the Manitoba Female Hockey League with the Westman Wildcats, followed by a five-year post-secondary career with the University of Regina Cougars.

In 2020, Magwood signed a professional contract in the Svenska damhockeyligan (SDHL), Sweden’s most elite female hockey league. Her team, MODO Hockey, is based in the northern part of the country, and is one of 10 teams in the SDHL.

She’s heading back to Sweden to play for MODO again this season, and her jersey will now be hung up in the Shamrock Centre in Killarney.

Congratulations Jaycee on your career and your ongoing success!
