Semi loses load on highway junction

BY KIM LANGEN

A semi truck – pulling a trailer loaded with trailers – lost control on Thursday morning, at the T-junction of Highway 18 and Highway 3, six miles south of Killarney.

No other vehicles were involved, and police and firefighters remained on site to control the highway traffic following the event, which was called in at 8:48 a.m.

Ambulance crews also attended the accident, but fortunately the driver of the semi was not injured.

The semi was travelling west on Highway 3, and carrying a load of four trailers and their components from Rainbow Trailers in Cartwright.

It was attempting a turn at the T-junction when the trailer section slid sideways onto the shoulder and into the ditch near the Shur-Gro anhydrous depot at the junction. The junction is located just over a small hill, and sometimes surprises drivers as they crest the rise and see the flashing lights just ahead.

The semi itself did not roll, and the fifth wheel trailer did not detach from the semi. But it twisted sideways, and all four trailers on the load were upended.

A tow truck service provider righted the trailer unit, and also flipped up the four trailers into an upright position, in readiness for reloading by the company.

The driver of the semi was ticketed for imprudent driving.
