New lumberyard springing up on north Broadway

BY KIM LANGEN

Construction is beginning on a new lumberyard at the north end of town.

After removing three feet of black topsoil, the site for the new Springhill Lumber Killarney build has been taking shape, just past the Shamrock Centre on Broadway Avenue.

Allan Wall, inside sales manager at the Can-Am Colony in Margaret, said that the Can-American Corrugating Company Ltd., a business run on the colony, recently visualized a business niche in the area.

“We saw a bit of an opening when Co-op Lumber closed, and I hinted that it could be an opportunity for a lumberyard in Killarney, because it’s progressive, and there’s a lot happening here,” said Wall.

Around 10 years ago, the colony took over an existing company in Winnipeg, and turned it into Springhill Lumber Winnipeg. The new lumberyard in Killarney would become a division of the Winnipeg business, he said.

The Can-Am Colony has been readying the building location for the past few weeks, after three feet of black topsoil was initially scraped up and hilled up on the location, he said, ready for sale.

“Can-Am Colony did 90 per cent of the site preparation, because they have all the equipment for moving and excavating,” he said.

The new manager for Springhill Lumber Killarney will be local contractor Phil Neufeld, who also runs his own business, Westman Specialty Contracting, said Wall.

“His company will be doing the inside work on the building, over this fall and winter,” said Wall. “Right now, the frame of the building is going up.”

Wall said the new lumber business could begin with contractor sales and lumber packages, starting as early as this fall, with deliveries delivered from the Winnipeg lumberyard.

Inventory will begin to arrive at the new Killarney lumberyard location by the spring of 2019.

“It will grow over time,” he said.

KILLARNEY LUMBERYARD RISING – Construction has begun at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Golf Course Road (north of the Shamrock Centre) on what will soon become Springhill Lumber Killarney. The new business will form a division of existing Winnipeg business Springhill Lumber, which is connected to the Can-Am Hutterite Colony in Margaret. Completion is expected next spring.

CAN-AM PANO – Levelling began early last month on the future Can-Am Hutterite Colony lumberyard on the north side of town across from the Co-op Cardlock.

BUSY ON BROADWAY  – The earth was being moved on the west side of Broadway Avenue in July, as work began for a new lumberyard in Killarney. The project is a venture involving both the Can-Am Hutterite Colony near Margaret and an affiliate, and will later include the construction of RTM (ready-to-move) buildings.
